FAQs

Do I need my dentist to send a referral in order to schedule an appointment?

No, you do not. Although most people are referred by their dentist, patients can schedule a free consultation without a referral.

At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?

Normally around age 8. At this age we just need to make sure there are not any major problems. Very few patients at this age need treatment. Of course, if you or your dentist feels something needs specific attention, please let us know.

What will happen during my free initial consultation?

We will start your appointment by taking photos and x-rays and then Dr. Richard Joseph will examine your teeth to determine if braces are needed. We will answer important questions about treatment, such as: 1) How much will it cost? 2) How long will the braces be worn? 3) Will it be necessary for any teeth to be removed or for any surgical procedures?

Why do I need braces?

Dental health is the most important reason. If your teeth and jaws don’t line up properly, tooth decay and gum disease can develop. Appearance is also an important reason for wearing braces. Many people have orthodontic treatment because they simply aren’t happy with the way their teeth look.

How long does braces treatment take?

Orthodontics generally requires 18-24 months of active treatment (monthly visits) which is followed by a few months of retainer guidance.

How often are appointments?

Appointments are scheduled according to patient needs. Most appointments are every 5-6 weeks!

What if there is an emergency?

If it is during the week, we ask that you call our office and we will try our best to see you that day! If it is the weekend, please message us on facebook or instagram. If it is a life threatening emergency, please call 911.

Why would I need to have teeth removed?

Sometimes it is necessary to remove teeth to achieve desired results when there is overcrowding, increased overbite or overjet.

Do braces hurt?

Patients usually do not experience any pain while in our office and the good news is we do not give any shots!  However, braces can make your teeth sore and tender in the beginning and for a few days after each visit.

What can I eat with braces?

We recommend patients eat soft foods like yogurt, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, smoothies, soups, ice cream, cottage cheese, cooked carrots, avocados, tuna salad, meatloaf, ravioli, ripe soft fruits, pudding, applesauce, corn OFF the cob, scrambled or hard boiled eggs! It is best to avoid hard or sticky foods like nuts, pretzels and chewy sticky candies.

Should I still see the general dentist while I am in braces?

Yes, absolutely! Routine dental cleanings should occur every 6 months. It is very important that patients receiving orthodontic treatment visit their dentist regularly.  Regular visits with the orthodontist are not a substitute for General Dental checkups.

How to maintain good oral hygiene?

Braces require a little extra effort to maintain good oral hygiene. To prevent staining on teeth, cavities, and gingivitis, it is recommended you brush your teeth morning and night, and after every meal, including snacks, to keep teeth clean. When brushing teeth, hold your toothbrush at different angles to reach those hard spots where food gets trapped along the gum-line and underneath the brackets. Use a circular motion on every tooth! You can use a proxy brush to clean in and between every bracket to remove any food that your regular toothbrush might miss. If you can't actually brush your teeth, at least rinse your mouth out with water by swishing water around after eating. Be sure to floss your teeth at least once a day using a floss threader.
